PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a diesel engine and a diesel engine operating method that improve fuel economy. SOLUTION: The diesel engine comprises a solenoid 2 used to open and close a solenoid valve 1 applied to a fuel injector for supplying fuel to a combustion chamber, a switch 6 connected in series to the solenoid 2, and a voltage regulation diode 8 connected in series to the solenoid 2 and connected in parallel to the switch 6. When the switch 6 is switched from an on state to an off state, energy accumulated in the solenoid 2 increases a voltage applied to the voltage regulation diode 8 instantaneously substantially over a threshold voltage. The voltage regulation diode 8 then carries a current to consume the energy. The solenoid valve 1 is thus closed rapidly, so that the diesel engine is improved in fuel economy, stabilized in engine speed at idling and protected against emission of black smoke.
