PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuously variable transmission capable of enhancing the transmitting efficiency and securing the shifting performance. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission is equipped with a pair of pulleys having a variable belt setting radius and a belt set around between the two pulleys and transmits the power between the pulleys by the sliding friction of the pulleys with the belt, wherein at least one of the pulley sliding surfaces and the belt sliding surface consist(s) of a composite material layer in which mono-crystal fibers are dispersed in a matrix being oriented in one direction, and the orientation should be such that the frictional coefficient in the crystal azimuth of the mono-crystal fibers in the pulley radial direction is smaller than the frictional coefficient in the crystal azimuth of the mono- crystal fibers in the pulley circumferential direction. It is preferable that the aspect ratio of the mono-crystal fibers is 2.5 or more, the content by volume is 90 vol.% or more, and that the crystal faces other than four-time symmetrical surfaces are exposed at the sliding surfaces.
