PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an internal combustion engine which prevents shortage and excess of an internal EGR amount when starting the internal engine from a cooling state. SOLUTION: A valve timing of an air intake valve is timed from the most retardant state by a hydraulic drive of a valve timing variable mechanism 25, and a valve overlapping becomes to increase an internal EGR amount. A hydraulic circuit for driving the valve timing variable mechanism 25 is formed so that oil in the part of the mechanism 25 side is distinguished from the oil in the part of the oil pump 32 side. Therefore, the oil in the mechanism 25 side used as working oil of the valve timing mechanism 25 in the hydraulic circuit can be employed for the one to be low volatile at low temperature compared with the oil of the oil pump 32 side used for lubricating oil of an engine. This process suppresses a response delay in action of the valve timing variable mechanism 25 when starting the engine at the cooling state. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
