PURPOSE: A method for processing soft handoff of a cellular system is provided to enable an MSC to determine whether to drop a base station by considering a reverse link, thereby preventing a call drop or a sound failure and deterioration of data throughput while performing the soft handoff. CONSTITUTION: A mobile station performs reverse power control(S201), and compares measured signal strength with a parameter value designated by an operator(S202,S203). If a base station satisfying a soft handoff condition exists, the mobile station transmits a drop request message to the base station(S204). The base station transmits the message to a traffic transceiver, and the traffic transceiver transmits a request response message to the mobile station(S205,S206). The traffic transceiver transmits a base station list with the drop request message to a handoff controller(S207,S208). The handoff controller compares a selected base station with the drop-requested base station(S209). If the two base stations are equal, the handoff controller transmits an internal timer driving message to the mobile station(S212).
