PURPOSE: An optical pickup device for different kinds of optical disks using an optical shutter is provided to integrate a polarization converter for changing polarized properties of an optical beam with a polarizer for selectively passing the optical beam according to the polarized properties, thereby simplifying a configuration of an optical shutter. CONSTITUTION: A light source(22) generates an optical beam to be irradiated on an optical disk(20). An objective lens(24) is located between the optical disk(20) and the light source(22), and condenses the optical beam of the light source(22) into the first information recording surface(20A) or the second information recording surface(20B) of the optical disk(20). The first information recording surface(20A) is used for a DVD, and the second information recording surface(20B) is used for a CD. A photo detector(26) converts the reflected optical beam incident via a beam splitter(28) and a sensor lens(32) into an electrical signal. A collimating lens(30) proceeds the optical beam in parallel toward the beam splitter(28). The beam splitter(28) transmits the optical beam to the objective lens(24), and reflects the reflected optical beam to the sensor lens(32).
