PURPOSE: A protection device for a disc breakage in a disc drive and a method thereof are provided to prevent the generation of a gap around a door by moving a tray inside, and reduce or stop the rotation velocity of a motor for preventing the breakage of a disc. CONSTITUTION: A protection device for a disc breakage in a disc drive includes an rpm sensing part(205) monitoring the rpm of a spindle motor(204) and detects the rpm of the spindle motor by a uniform time interval. If the rpm is larger than a reference value, clamping for a disc(201) is not normally carried out and disc breakage is caused. This rpm is reported to a control part(206) by a signal representing the abnormality of the rpm. The control part transmits a signal for controlling the rpm of the spindle motor to a motor driving part(207). The motor driving part controls to down the rpm of the spindle motor, downing the rpm of a turn table(203) accordingly. If the rpm of the spindle motor is abnormal, the control part controls a loading motor(208) to move a tray inside by a predetermined distance in the disc drive. Further, the control part set ignorance mode for door open commands applied from a command applying part(210), so that the disc drive does not open a door in spite of the door open command.
