PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for managing battery of hybrid electric vehicle are provided to lengthen the useful life of the battery and achieve improved operating efficiency of a motor. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a battery pack(10) having a plurality of batteries connected serially so as to supply a driving voltage to a motor(70), a battery management system(20) for maintaining the batteries of the battery pack at the optimum condition by performing estimation on the charged state and monitoring on the current and voltage, a safety disconnection unit(30) for cutting off the battery power being supplied to the load upon occurrence of system down or overload, a hybrid control unit(40) for controlling and monitoring operation of controllers of the hybrid electric vehicle through a communication system, and a motor control unit(50) for controlling the driving torque and speed of the motor, and limiting the exciting current being supplied to the battery in cases that the motor operates by a generator when the charge voltages between batteries are not balanced.
