PURPOSE: A method for driving an AC PDP using a local scanning method is provided to improve the scanning efficiency by diving a screen into eight sections and arranging bit couples in each section according to a proper order. CONSTITUTION: A three-electrode surface discharge AC PDP includes a plurality of cells. Each cell includes two row electrodes and one column electrode. A screen of the three-electrode surface discharge AC PDP is divided into eight sections of B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, and B8. Top bits and bottom bits of digital image signals are formed as eight couples of (l8,l1), (l7,l2), (l6,l3), (l5,l4), (l4,l5), (l3,l6), (l2,l7), and (l1,l8). The bits and bottom bits of digital image signals are arranged and scanned in each section according to a proper order by performing four steps. An erasing pulse is applied to a scan electrode after a predetermined period.
