PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wireless, battery-less, asset sensor and communication system 10 comprising a battery-less sensor 40 integrally housed within a housing 41 and a reader device 20 integrally housed within a housing 21. SOLUTION: The reader 20 is coupled to handheld portable data collector (PDA) and wirelessly transmits a time varying signal S<SB>1</SB>. When this signal is detected by the battery-less sensor 40, the battery-less sensor 40 derives power from the wirelessly transmitted signal, powers up, then measures/senses analog signals 102 from an asset such as a machine M and converts the digital analog signals into digital asset data 104. The digital asset data and asset information stored as an option are formatted to modulate the transmitted signal S<SB>1</SB>for transmitting the asset data and the information back to the reader 20, wherein the modulated transmitted signal S<SB>2</SB>is demodulated and communicated to a PDC 60.
