PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device allowing a high-pressure discharge lamp to be replaced without turning off other high-pressure discharge lamps, and capable of automatically re-lighting the high-pressure discharge lamp after completing the replacement. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp lighting device is provided with a plurality of discharge lamp lighting circuits 3 connected to a power source 4 in parallel with one another; the high-pressure discharge lamps 1 respectively connected to the lighting circuits 3; high-pressure discharge lamp mounting detection terminals 2A and 2B for detecting the mounting and dismounting of the discharge lamps 1 to/from sockets 2; and a protection means for turning off the discharge lamp 1 and bringing it into a waiting state when the discharge lamp 1 is determined to be abnormal. When the discharge lamp 1 is determined to be abnormal and brought into a waiting state, the dismounting of the discharge lamp 1 from the socket 2 is detected by the voltage of the detection terminal 2B, and when the re-mounting of the high-pressure discharge lamp to the socket is detected, the discharge lamp 1 is started after elapsing a predetermined period.
