PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transfer device that hinders paper dust from sticking to an image carrier while accomplishing one-pass system double-sided transfer and, further, that hinders occurrences of wrinkles in a recording medium. SOLUTION: The transfer device includes a first intermediate transfer belt 8 and a second intermediate transfer belt 16 which are endlessly moved while forming a nip by the contact of their surfaces. During the process in which transfer paper P held in the nip is conveyed further downstream of the nip in the direction of the belt movement, a first toner image pre-transferred to the second intermediate transfer belt 16 from a photoreceptor via the first intermediate transfer belt 8 is transferred to a first face of the transfer paper P. At the same time as this, a second toner image pre-transferred to the first intermediate transfer belt 8 from the photoreceptor is transferred to a second face of the transfer paper.
