PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus in which when a certain color ink among a plurality of color inks in an ink cartridge has run out, other remaining inks can be utilized without being discarded. SOLUTION: A printing apparatus 100 comprises a first cartridge 120 having at least one tank to hold ink of a first color, a second multicolor cartridge 121 having three tanks capable of holding ink of a second color, ink of a third color and ink of a fourth color, and a third cartridge 122 having at least one tank to hold ink of a substitute color or a custom color. The third cartridge 122 can hold at least one ink selected from inks of a first color, a second color, a third color and a fourth color.
