PURPOSE: A washing machine having a laundry floatation-detecting device is provided to prevent the scatter of water and the damage of the laundry generated by the floatation of the laundry by detecting that the laundry as a pillow floats over the constant height. CONSTITUTION: A washing machine having a laundry floatation-detecting device is composed of an outer case; a water tank(2) installed in the outer case; a washing tub(3) rotatively mounted in the water tank; a driving motor(7) for rotating the washing tub; and the detecting device for detecting that the height of the laundry received in the washing tub is over the constant position. The detecting device comprises a light emitting unit(50a) disposed to one side of a tub cover(8) installed to the upper end of the water tank and a light receiving unit(50b) arranged at the other side to face the light emitting unit.
