PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recorder which prevents the deterioration of a recording characteristic caused by the change of environmental temperatures, while taking the performance of laser beam source into consideration, and also to provide the data recording method and program. SOLUTION: The data recorder is provided with a control means for changing over a pulse width of a recording pulse in accordance with a recording medium and/or the temperature around it, and the changeover is made according to the temperature so that the pulse width becomes narrower within the range not exceeding the rating of a laser diode. That is, the pulse width of the recording pulse is changed over stepwise so as to obtain a peak power of a maximum rating or lower of the laser diode by increasing the pulse width at the low temperature, while preventing the deterioration of the recording characteristic by reducing the pulse width at the high temperature.
