PURPOSE: A muffler with a variable acoustic characteristic is provided to secure the muffler suitable for an exhaust gas system operating even under high thermal load. CONSTITUTION: A muffler with a variable acoustic characteristic has a housing(13); pipes(9) integrated in the housing; an exhaust gas valve integrated in the housing; and a guide bushing(15) arranged to a piston rod(3) inside the housing. The exhaust gas valve has a diaphragm(10), a spring(2), a piston(7), the piston rod, a closing element(5) of the piston rod, and a pressure connection line(4). The closing element is movably arranged to close one of the pipes to the large or small extent. The diaphragm is thermally insulated from the piston rod. A layer(14) of an insulating part is situated between the closing element and a pressure chamber(1).
