<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonlinear optical device such as an optical switch which is driven on a low voltage, operates at high response speed and brings about less insertion loss and crosstalk, an optical attenuator, an optical modulator and so on. <P>SOLUTION: Y branch 1×2 optical switch 201 as the optical device is constructed by laminating an epitaxial buffer layer 222 composed of KTa<SB>Y</SB>Nb<SB>1-Y</SB>O<SB>3</SB>(KTN) and an optical waveguide layer 223 composed of KTN on a substrate 221 composed of Nb doped SrTiO<SB>3</SB>single crystal semiconductor to be a lower electrode in this order. The substrate 221 is connected to ground 224. First and second upper electrodes 212, 213 are formed on the optical waveguide layer 223. These are connected to a power source not shown in the figure, via a driving circuit also not shown in the figure. A refractive index of the optical waveguide is varied by using an oxide paraelectric material with second order electro-optic effect and applying voltage to a specified portion of the optical waveguide. Consequently the high response speed becomes feasible. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
