PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engaging state detecting device for sliding fastener element strings which can efficiently and surely detect the presence/absence of an engagement slippage of a pair of right and left element strings under an engaged state while a slider is passed while a continuous sliding fastener chain is transferred to various kinds of finishing processing sections, and by which the reduction of the costs of finishing processes, and the increase of the yield of a product can be realized. SOLUTION: This engaging state detecting device for sliding fastener element strings is equipped with a chain stopping means which is arranged on the downstream side in the carrying direction of the fastener chain (C) and stops the carrying of the chain (C) at a detecting position of the right and left elements (E) which are adjacent to each other on the space upstream side end part of the chain (C), and a detecting section (60) having a mechanical detecting means which detects the presence/absence of the engagement slippage on the right and left elements (E) when the chain (C) is stopped. The detecting section (60) has a detecting element (61) which moves between a normal first contact position and an abnormal second contact position. When the chain (C) is stopped, a state is judged to be normal if the detecting element (61) is located at the first contact position where the detecting element (61) does not come into contact with the right and left elements (E), and a state is judged to be abnormal when the detecting element (61) is located at the second contact position where the detecting element (61) comes into contact with the right and left elements (E).
