Treating shells comprises treatment with activated water followed by fermentation and/or calcination. Independent claims are also included for: (1) shell material produced as above; (2) food or food supplement comprising the shell material; (3) pharmaceutical composition comprising the shell material; (4) mixture comprising 0-99 parts by weight (pbw) of lime produced by grinding shells that have been cleaned with activated water, 0-100 pbw of lime (L1) produced by grinding shells that have been cleaned with activated water and then fermented, 0-100 pbw of lime (L2) produced by grinding shells that have been cleaned with activated water and then calcined and optionally slaked with activated water and 0-99 pbw burnt sand and/or ash, provided that L1 or L2 is present; (5) apparatus for activating water, comprising a tank coated on the inside with calcined shell and/or quartz and equipped with an inlet for nonactivated water and an outlet for activated water.
