PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably detect a lighting state of an electrodeless bulb in a microwave driven lamp. SOLUTION: A microwave driven lamp (10) comprises a light reflective cavity (28); an electrodeless bulb (16) included in a light reflective cavity (26) projecting light when the bulb (16) is excited by a microwave; a magnetron (12) supplying the microwave to excite the bulb (16); a wave guide (14) for coupling the microwaves projected from the magnetron (12) with the cavity (26) so as to excite the bulb (16); a housing (22) for housing the lamp (10); detectors (102, 202) disposed in the housing (22) and detecting microwaves not coupled with the bulb (16) during the operation of the magnetron (12) to output a signal indicating the level of the received microwaves; and a magnetron controller (300) coupled with the detectors (102, 202) and turning off the magnetron (12) when the level of the signal indicates that the level of the microwaves exceed a threshold.
