FIELD: mechanical engineering; internal in combustion engines. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention can be used at modification of engines. Proposed method includes changing of volume of combustion chamber which is provided by shifting of engine crankshaft and connecting rod and piston to side of top dead center. Shifting of crankshaft is done by turning eccentric race of crankshaft main bearings by control member. According to invention, connecting rod and piston are displaced to side of top dead center when preparing engine for starting and are returned automatically to initial position through control member when engine runs steadily at idling. ^ EFFECT: improved operating reliability and serviceability of starting system of diesel engines with reduced compression ratio at low ambient temperatures, reduced time taken for preparing the engine for loading. ^ 1 dwg
