IC engine crankcase machining procedure uses single milling tool with two sets of cutting edges for coarse and fine surface milling

The procedure for milling the edge of an engine crankcase wall (18) uses a single milling tool (30) with its axis of rotation perpendicular to the machined surface and having two sets of cutters (32, 36) with edges (34, 38) in concentric rings. During operation the milling tool is moved horizontally so that the crankcase wall is machined first by the outer ring of cutters to remove any casting surplus, and then by the inner ring to give a fine finish.
