A novel composition of tertiary carboxylic acids which is suitable for use as a raw material for tertiary carboxylic acid esters or metal salts thereof which are highly biodegradable. It is a composition which comprises C7-17 tertiary carboxylic acids as major components and in which the content of tertiary carboxylic acids having, in the molecule, one carbon atom bonded to four carbon atoms and containing, in the molecule, no carbon atom bonded to three or more carbon atoms is 90 wt.% or higher.
