PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a television and an image data storing and reproducing method capable of storing image data regarding a plurality of still images in the optimum data quantity every image data within a memory of a fixed capacity. SOLUTION: In storing the latest image data obtained from a temporary recording domain 61 in a storage domain 62, compression processing is performed with the respective image data which have already been stored on the basis of order of storage or priority by varying degrees of compression rate. Then, the latest image data are stored with its high resolution retained within a storage domain 62 of a limited capacity and the respective image data already stored are stored in a state of smaller compression rate according as the more important they are for a user. Thus, the image data regarding the plurality of still images can be stored within the storage domain 62 without increasing the capacity in the storage domain 62 and, regarding important image data, the deterioration of the picture quality can be suppressed to the minimum.
