<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable length packet storage apparatus and method for enhancing the utilizing efficiency of a buffering shared memory. <P>SOLUTION: The buffering shared memory is configured with buffer areas of two large and small kinds, and a reception packet length monitor section 1-1 monitors the length of a received packet to calculate a ratio of the number of received packets of two large and small kinds by using a threshold value for a border. A buffer size share section 1-2 determines a size of a used (free) pointer of the buffer areas for a next use so that the ratio of the number of large and small received packets is coincident with a configuration ratio of the buffer areas of the large and small sizes of the buffering shared memory, and informs a free pointer management section 1-4 about the size. The free pointer management section 1-4 includes a free pointer queue of the buffer areas of the large and small sizes and registers a free pointer to the free pointer queue of a designated size. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
