PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus including a double side image read means having two image read sensors to read a double side image of an original wherein a user can grasp which of the image read sensors is defective on the occurrence that a defect takes place in one of the image read sensors. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus 1 includes: an original read means 3 that includes a front side image read sensor 12 for reading a front side image of an original and a rear side image read sensor 13 for reading a rear side image of the original to read the double side images of the original through unidirectional passing of paper; a fault detection means 14 for individually detecting a fault caused in the two image read sensors 12, 13; and report means 29, 30 for informing a user about the presence of a fault in either of the image read sensor 12 and 13 whose fault is detected by the fault detection means 14 for detecting the occurrence of a fault in the image read sensor 12 or 13.
