PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power-saving hybrid autofocus camera equipped with a plurality of AF means. SOLUTION: An electronic camera detects presence/absence of a change in a photographic scene and, only upon discriminating the presence (affirmative discrimination of Step #4), detects a focus lens position D2 through a range finding process by a phase contrast detection method (the second range finding process) (Step #5). If the absence of a change is discriminated (negative discrimination of Step #4), the second range finding process is omitted. With no second range finding process performed, power consumption is stopped in a range finding sensor and a second range finding circuit. If the presence of a change in the photographic scene is discriminated (affirmative discrimination of Step #4), the electronic camera performs a range finding process (the first range finding process) by a contrast method in the proximity of the lens position D2 detected in the second range finding process, and detects the focused lens position D1 (Step #7).
