A backlight suitable for a large-sized liquid crystal display unit. A backlight (2) for illuminating a liquid crystal panel (3) from the back face side is formed by combining backlight units (10, 10,...). Between the backlight (2) and the liquid crystal panel (3) is provided, for example, a transparent acrylic plate (4). This prevents brightness unevenness from occurring at joining portions of the backlight units (10, 10,...) even when the backlight (2) is formed by combining the backlight units (10, 10,...).
