Disclosed is an apparatus for attaching wall cladding to a building comprising (a) an elongate slat member (2) with a wall cladding attachment surface (4) and a spacer attachment surface (6), and (b) a spacer (8) adapted for attachment to the spacer attachment surface at an appropriate spacing from another spacer, wherein the spacer attachment surface is formed with a channel, and the spacer is formed in a shape adapted for fitting into the channel so that the spacer can be at least temporarily held in position at a convenient distance apart from another spacer on the slat member.
