PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a button type alkaline battery using zinc containing no mercury as a negative electrode active material which is improved in storage property, leakage resistance, and safety. SOLUTION: This is an alkaline battery which has a positive electrode can 4, a negative electrode can 5, and a negative electrode agent 3 containing zinc or zinc alloy containing no mercury, and in which the negative electrode can 5 contacts with the negative electrode agent 3. A zinc layer 7 which contains at least one kind of elements selected from indium and bismuth in the range 0.01 wt% or more and 30 wt% or less is formed on the surface of the negative electrode can 5 in contact with the negative electrode agent 3, and the positive electrode can 4 is formed of stainless steel of austenite-ferrite two-phase system.
