摘要 <p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) medium which prevents the crystal grain diameters of the PMR film from becoming large by evenly adjusting the growth of an underlayer film and the PMR film. <P>SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium has the underlayer film between the substrate and the perpendicular magnetic recording film to promote the perpendicular orientation of the recording film. Further it has a crystal grain growth discontinuation film between the above underlayer film and the perpendicular magnetic recording film to suppress the crystal grain growth in the recording film. Since a crystal grain growth discontinuation film is formed between the underlayer film and PMR film, the crystal grain growth can be effectively suppressed in the PMR film.
