PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling coal charge level in a coke oven in which the coal charge level in the direction of oven width is maintained substantially constant even if there are variations in coal properties and dispensing speed of each coal feed hopper. SOLUTION: Coal is charged from each coal feed hopper 5 on a coal charge car 4 for each of n-pieces of coal charge ports 2 which are arranged in the direction of oven width on a coke oven 1, followed by measuring the coal charge level in the oven using a level-measuring device 20 of a microwave type installed on the upper part of each of the coal feed hoppers 5. Then, the amount of coal to be additionally charged into each of the coal charge ports 2 is calculated from the difference between the coal charge level preset for each of the coal charge ports 2 and the measured coal charge level and is stored. The coal charge level is corrected to the preset level by charging coal, the amount thereof corresponding to the amount of coal to be additionally charged being corrected, into each coal charge port of the next furnace when the coal charge car 4 is moved to the next furnace.
