PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a titania based photocatalyst showing an excellent visible light responsiveness. SOLUTION: The titania based photocatalyst is represented by the formula TiSi<SB>x</SB>N<SB>y</SB>O<SB>2+2x-y</SB>(0.01<x<1, 0.003<y<0.3), and has an absorption spectrum in which, when an absorbance at 300 nm is 1, the absorbance at 450 nm is not less than 0.1, and the absorbance in 600 nm is not more than 0.1.
