PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display which has satisfactory image quality and can be manufactured with high yield. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display is provided with an element substrate 20a, a common electrode substrate 22 provided above the element substrate 20a at a prescribed gap interval, a liquid crystal layer 4 filled between the element substrate 20a and the common electrode substrate 22a, and a light shielding layer 25a provided in an insulating layer 35 so that read-out light does not reach a switch transistor (Tr) 9a when the read light is emitted from the common electrode substrate 22a side. The element substrate 20a has its construction having the Tr 9a formed on a substrate 10, a holding capacitance 13a connected to the Tr 9a, the insulating layer 35 formed on the Tr 9a and the holding capacitance 13a and a pixel electrode 19 formed on the insulating layer 35 and connected to one output terminal of the Tr 9a and two-dimensionally formed in a matrix shape. One electrode 17a of a holding capacitance 13 is commonly connected to the one output terminal 16a of the Tr 9a and the other electrode 18a of the holding capacitance 13 is electrically connected to the light shielding layer 25a.
