[Class 53] In order to absorb the water produced during the operation of an air-depolarized cell, starch or other substance capable of swelling in water is introduced into the cell in greater quantity than is necessary to absorb the electrolyte when the cell is first made up. The surplus starch &c. absorbs the water produced during the working of the cell and prevents it from reaching the positive electrode. The latter may be enclosed in a sheath of impregnated paper to prevent it from coming into contact with the electrolyte when this is first poured into the cell. The electrolyte may consist of a solution of chloride of ammonium, zinc, magnesium or calcium, and when wheat flour is used as the absorbent and swelling substance at least 30 parts of flour are added to 100 parts of ammonium chloride solution. |
