PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of an automatic transmission capable of reducing vehicle vibration generated by the idling vibration of an engine during neutral control. SOLUTION: The automatic transmission 3 is equipped with a first clutch engaged at the start of a vehicle, a brake engaged with the first clutch at a second speed stage, and a second clutch engaged with the first clutch at a third speed stage. When it is particularly determined that a road is flat during performing the neutral control, the transmission is brought into the state of the third speed stage by the second clutch without performing hill holding by the brake. Rotating parts of the transmission mechanism are not fixed to a transmission case by the brake during the neutral control, and the idling vibration of the engine is prevented from being transmitted from the transmission mechanism. Since the gear ratio of the automatic transmission mechanism 5 becomes high, the amplitude of the idling vibration becomes small and the vibration transmitted to a driving wheel is reduced.
