Disclosed is an isolated nucleic acid based compound which reduces the level of hyaluronan synthase (HAS) activity wherein said compound specifically targets a nucleic acid molecule encoding SEQ ID NOs:24, 25 or 26 or encoding a sequence containing one or more conservative amino acid substitutions of SEQ ID NOs:24, 25 or 26, wherein said nucleic acid based compound is selected from an anti-sense molecule, a sense molecule, an siRNA, a dsRNA, an RNAi, a ribozyme, an oligomeric compound, an oligonucleotide and a DNAzyme.
