Lignin is removed from effluents esp. from bleaching plants for sulphite or sulphate cellulose by adsorption on phenol-formaldehyde resins, which may have weak anion exchange props. due to the presence of amino or hydroxy gps. Subsequently, the resin is eluted, the eluate is treated with an alkaline agent, then concentrated and burnt, or partly recycled. The lignin-free water is recycled or released to sewage.
