1399218 Eddy current brakes LABAVIA SGE 4 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31153/72 Heading H2A An eddy current brake 1, for a shaft, e.g. of a vehicle, which is rotatable relative to a support, comprises on annular inductor stator 2 which forms the support and carries outer rings 12a, 13a of two coaxial bearings 12, 13 centrally thereof, fluid-tight seals 19 beside the bearings, and a rotor 3 connectible to the shaft for rotation therewith and comprising a central hub 25 consisting of an internally grooved sleeve 26 mounted in the bearings and engaged by an externally grooved stub 27 the sleeve and stub having integral therewith respective plates 29, 30 extending transversely thereof and which both axially straddle the seals 19 and have coupled thereto for rotation therewith respective armatures 32, 33 which straddle the stator 2. This provides a brake which is axially short and has adequate lubrication of the, e.g. oppositely directed tapered conical roller, bearings; such lubrication is effected via a vertical tube 23 to the bore of a sleeve 11 which at its upper portion is grooved at 24, whence lubricating grease flows as shown by arrows f, the diameters of rings 21 against which lips 20 of the seals 19 bear being less than those of the bearing outer rings 12a, 13a so that no lubricant will remain even if the seals leak. Shims 36 at the coupling of armaturebearing fins 34 to the plates 29, 30 permit adjustment of the brake air gap. Whilst, as shown, the stator comprises electromagnet cores 6 carrying coils 7, 8 and polar expansions 9, 10, it may alternatively comprise permanent magnets as disclosed in French Specification 2,120,568. |
