1313240 Thermal regenerators GENERAL MOTORS CORP 9 Dec 1971 [4 Jan 1971] 57200/71 Heading F4K [Also in Division F2] A rotary regenerator seal assembly 38 provided between each face of the rotating matrix 12 and the housing 10 to confine the hot and cold fluids to the desired flow paths through the matrix and to minimize leakage between the paths comprises a carrier 48 supporting a number of seal wear elements 54 defining cross arm and circular rim seals for the regenerator, the seal elements 54 being fastened to the carrier 48 by a plasma spray bond material. This material includes a layer of bond coat material 64, e.g. a nickel aluminide material, covered by a layer of plasma retaining material 66, e.g. 75% nickel 25% graphite. The carrier 48 is located positively against rotation by a number of pins or dowels (not shown) projecting from the fixed structure of the housing into slots 51 in lugs 52 extending radially outwards from the carrier 48. A secondary seal structure comprising a sealing member 56, a supporting member 58, a support plate 60 and a hinge element or abutment strip 62 supports the carrier and seal elements secured thereto within the housing. The seal elements 54 defining the circular rim seal 44, 46 have interfitting S-shaped ends. In a further embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) a seal wear element (54a) is secured by a bond coat (64) and plasma retaining coat (66a) directly to the outer rim portion (24) of the matrix which is provided with an annular groove or stepped portion (24a) to receive the seal element.
