A flat bar knitting machine has pairs of inclined main needles beds carrying series of slidable latch needles and above each main needle bed is provided an auxiliary bed carrying slidable auxiliary needles which are actuated by cams to be advanced and returned to receive and retain stitches from corresponding latch beedles when they are in the raised position. The auxiliary beds are moveable laterally along the main needle beds to allow transfer of stitches between the latch needles. The auxiliary needles may be linear and slidable in straight grooves or may be curved and slideable in correspondingly curved grooves so that the tips of the needles follow arcuate paths. Pref. the tips of the auxiliary needles are hooked to allow the stitches to be positively retained and pref. the auxiliary needles have heels which are acted on by the cams. The arrangement operates accurately and allows a stitch to be transferred to or from a latch needle which is already carrying a stitch thereby allowing a greater variety of patterns to be knitted.
