Compositions of linear polyamides or polyesters containing a fluorescent dyestuff which glows on exposure to ultra-violet light and rapidly ceases to glow when no longer so exposed. Specified dyestuffs are those of the formulae where R is methyl or ethyl, where X is chlorine, hydroxy, aliphatic amino or substituted aniline, where X is oxygen, sulphur, nitrogen or an R-substituted nitrogen where R is hydroxyalkyl or dialkylaminoalkyl, where R is a substituted alkyl or aryl, where R is an aryl group which may be substituted, R is an aryl group which may be substituted, where X is chlorine, amine, aryl or alkyl substituted amino groups, where R is stilbene or substituted stilbene, where X is SO3C6H5, chlorine or CN, where Ar is an aryl radical and R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl radical, where Ar is an aryl radical and R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl radical, and ALSO:A fishing line contains a fluorescent dyestuff which glows on exposure to ultra violet light and which rapidly ceases to glow when no longer exposed whereby the line is visible above water but is relatively invisible below water.ALSO:A fishing line contains a fluorescent dyestuff which glows on exposure to ultra-violet light and which rapidly ceases to glow when no longer exposed. Specified fishing lines are those derived from polyesters and polyamides. Specified fluorescent dyestuffs are substituted coumarins, azoles, benzidine sulphone derivatives, acylate derivatives of diaminostilbene disulphonic acid and naphthalene triazole derivatives. The dye may be incorporated in the melt during manufacture or applied to the line from a dyebath. The dye glows in direct sunlight and on overcast or cloudy days but does not glow in water.
