<p>Cpds where R1, R1', R2 and R2' are the same or different hydrogen or halogen (at no. is not > 35). Each of the two benzene rings B and B' may be independently substd. with a halogen atom (at. no is not > 35), and/or by 1-3 lower alkyl groups or one or two trifluoromethyl groups. The compounds have antibacterial activity. 114.7 Parts 4,2',4'-trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether and 39.5 parts pyridine are dissolved in 600 parts methylenechloride and 25 parts phosgene are led through at 10-20 deg.C. The excess phosgene is removed by passing through nitrogen and the crystals are filtered off and washed with methylene chloride. The filtrate is washed several times with 150 parts water and dried over sodium sulphate. After removal of solvent, the product O,O'-bis-(2-(2',4'-dichlorophenoxy)-5-chlorophenyl) ester is obtained as an oil which crystallises on standing. Recrystallised from isopropyl ether, the diester has a m.p. 128-130 deg.C.</p> |
