1327342 Amalgam cartridges D G SMITH 22 June 1971 29221/71 Heading B8C [Also in Division B1] An amalgam cartridge 100 is formed from a flexible plastics extrusion of hollow, dumb-bell section by heat-sealing the ends 166, 168 to form two compartments 102, 104 interconnected by passage 108 which is held closed by a spring-clip 110 to separate powder and mercury in compartments 104, 102, clip 110 having holes 136 by which the cartridge is correctly aligned in a mixing and dispensing apparatus (see Division B1). Mercury and powder are introduced into their compartments from nozzles under vacuum conditions before sealing. In an alternative form, passage 108 is closed by a frangible membrane, and since a closure clip is unnecessary, alignment recesses are formed on the cartridge. The mixing and dispensing apparatus operates to squeeze the compartment 104 between slider blocks 200, 202 which force the mercury into compartment 102, whereupon a rotatable mixer 256 is lowered so that members 284 rapidly squeeze and release the compartment 102 as they are driven by an eccentric crankshaft 272 from motor 260. After mixing is completed and mixer 256 is retracted, sliders 300, 302 are brought together so that recesses 306, 308 may shape the compartment 102 into a cylinder again. Twin cutters are then lowered on pivoting member 410 to cut off the ends of compartment 102, the amalgam then being ejected into a suitable instrument by a hand operated plunger which passes through the compartment. |
