By controlling the oxygen supply to the partial combustion process, the degree of ore reduction, and the amount of soot formation and so the degree of refinement and carburisation of the metal bath 12 may both be controlled. Where burners at different levels in the furnace are used, the gases from the lower level burners are used primarily to generate reducing gases and soot. Additional heat is supplied to the furnace from plasma torches or arc producing electrodes 14, separate from or combined with the burners 9, or an induction coil around the hearth portion 7 Fig.2 (not shown).</p>
