Disclosed is a separator for a battery. The separator includes a porous film, a first roller, and a second roller. The first and second rollers are associated with both ends of a porous film. The first roller is wound with a portion of the porous film and is configured to rotate to unroll the film. The second roller is configured to rotate in an opposite direction to a rotary direction of the first roller to roll up the film.

1. A separator assembly for a battery that includes an anode and a cathode, the separator assembly comprising:
a first roller; a second roller; a porous film that is spaced apart from at least one of the anode and the cathode and that has a first end coupled to the first roller and a second end coupled to the second roller, wherein the second end is opposite the first end and separated from the first end; wherein an unused first portion of the porous film that includes the first end is wound around the first roller, wherein the first roller is configured to rotate to unroll the porous film to move the porous film relative to the anode and the cathode so that a first segment of the unused first portion of the porous film is deployed between the anode and the cathode; wherein the second roller is operative to rotate to move the porous film relative to the anode and the cathode so as to roll a previously deployed second segment of the porous film around the second roller, and wherein the first and second rollers are operative to cease rotation in response to the first end being reached after the unused first portion of the porous film has finished to unroll.
