Melting of high quality ferrosilicon wherein molten slag is accumulated and maintained in a furnace, the starting materials comprising quartz, iron ore, bulk carbonaceous matter for reducing the core, and materials producing the slag, in which the carbonaceous matter is sufficiently immersed in the slag layer due its ability to float. The starting material is supported in the upper part of the furnace and the ends of the electrodes are always immersed in the slag. The ratio (CaO + MgO + BaO)/SiO2 in the slag is 0.6, the m.pt. is reduced without loss of SiO2 activity, the slag acting as an electrical resistance and an electric current is passed to provide Joule heating sufficient to reduce the SiO2 to Si. The process avoids side reaction occurring in the electric arc process producing deleterious components (e.g. Al).
|
