Surrounding the H.V. feeder is a toroidal core supported by an unearthed metal column filled with insulating oil. The feeder passes transversely through the cent re of the toroid and coaxially with both is a metal cylinder so that the cylinder and H.V. conductor form the horizontal arm of a cross. On one side only of the cross arm are capacitors placed between the metal cylinder and an outer insulator. The capacitors are short annular sections placed adjacent to each other, extending from one side of the toroidal core to the outer extremity of the cross arm. They serve to modify the voltage distribution between the two parts of the split dielectric. As this structure is placed on one side of the core only, it is possible to assemble or dismantle the transformer by inserting or withrawing the arm in one piece.
