1394091 Making pressure vessels SNAMPROGETTI SpA 9 May 1972 [13 May 1971] 21666/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division B1] An apparatus comprising an internal shell or a plurality of superimposed internal shells formed of an elastic metallic material capable of withstanding high pressure and suitable for forming the sole shell of a single-shell pressure vessel; and, over the internal shell(s), an external shell or a plurality of superimposed external shells formed of the same or a different metallic material as that of the internal shell(s); wherein the external shell or the innermost external shell completely covers and abuts the internal shell or the outermost internal shell; wherein the or each internal shell is partially or totally "yielded" (i.e. deformed beyond its elastic deformation range); wherein the external shell or the innermost external shell is not welded to the internal shell or to the outermost internal shell; and wherein, when the or each external shell is formed of a plurality of annular shell segments in end-to-end relationship, the segments are not welded circumferentially to adjacent segments in the same shell. The internal shells may consist of cylindrical annular plates joined endto-end, or arcuate plates longitudinally and circumferentially welded to form a cylinder, or an enbloc tube or tubes, or any combination of these. The external shells which are preferably of carbon steel may be either forged or calendered and welded or rolled annular plates; the external shells are heated, slipped on to the internal shell(s) or inner external shell(s) and allowed to cool. In order to allow easy diffusion of hydrogen through the internal shells to the outside, a steel strap may be wound around the (outermost) internal shell before applying the (innermost) external shell so as to leave a hollow space therebetween, between the windings of the strap. After construction, the whole pressure vessel is subjected to hydrostatic or other internal pressure to "yield" the internal shell(s), and may also be annealed.
