<p>1277377 Catheters C R BARD Inc 2 Feb 1970 [3 Feb 1969] 4883/70 Heading A5R Inflation fluid supply means for a balloon catheter comprises a valve 4 including a generally cylindrical elastic body 5, Fig. 7, which body has at least one blind bore 8 formed axially therein and a generally cylindrical wall 6, the wall having an axially formed slit in communication with the bore 8, the bore 8 being generally frusto-conical, and an annular collar 13, Fig. 3, of relatively rigid plastics material, metal or rubber. In the embodiment shown, the body 5 has two bores 7, 8, separated by the wall 6. In use, the body 5 is adhesively secured into one end portion of a tube 3, preferably an inflation funnel of a balloon catheter, annular ribs 12 being formed on the body to facilitate the forming of a strong adhesive bond, and the collar 13 is placed around the said end portion of the said tube 3 and arranged to abut a lateral flange 11 of the body 5 at the end of the tube 3. The interior surface of the collar 13 is formed with a tapered portion 15, adapted to engage the surface of the tube 3, and a cylindrical portion 14, there being an annular space between this surface and that of the exterior of the tube 3, as seen in Fig. 2 (not shown). A syringe tip L may be placed in fluid communication with the interior of the tube 3 by applying pressure at the slit 10 which is opened causing the annular space to be filled, as shown. Various types of syringe tip or a needle may be used. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a portion (22) of the valve body (21) is tapered and the bore in this region of the body is substantially reduced in diameter. In a further modification, Fig. 11 (not shown) the part of the body (25) to one side of the wall (26) is removed. The collar may be modified as in Fig. 8 (not shown) and provided with a flange (17), the flange 11 of the body being removed, and in a further modification, Fig. 9 (not shown) the collar is replaced by a flexible rubber or plastics band (20); alternatively the collar (28), Fig. 12 (not shown) may be formed integrally with the tube.</p> |
