1337963 Selective signalling K M GOLDBERG 26 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 56301/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division H1] A credit card verifier unit comprises a plurality of selector means, one for each digit of a multidigit credit card code, and a plurality of individual signal generating means each for generating a signal representing a different value of a digit in the code, each selector means being manually movable in one direction to positions representing the values and movable in a second direction to operate the signal generating means associated with the value to which the selector is set. Of eleven slide-buttons, each having ten possible positions, one is set to indicate the identity of the credit card issuing company and the other ten in accordance with the credit card number. A roller is moved across to depress the slide-buttons in turn so that the first slide-button produces one of ten tones and the other ten each depress one (according to the setting of the slidebutton) often bars shared between the ten slidebuttons to generate one of ten tones for each of these ten slide-buttons. The tones are transmitted over a telephone line, microwave link, or cable to a central processor which can send back a respective tone to energize a yes or no lamp. A ready and a repeat lamp can also be energized under the control of the central processor, the former in response to a tone or tones sent to the central processor in response to an access button initially. The repeat lamp is also energized by a timer if the central processor does not energize the yes, no or repeat lamp within ten seconds of energization of the ready lamp. The signals sent to the lamps also control retractable stops for the roller. The positions of the slide-buttons are indicated on numeral drums. An imprinter for imprinting from the credit card on to an invoice may be provided having a roller linked to the slide-buttons roller. Alternatively, each of the ten slide-buttons, when depressed by the roller, may close contacts to actuate the tone generators. |
